Outreach and Community

This page will show my outreach activities and my involvement in the community!

Clemson ASL Club

Most of my involvement at Clemson has been through the American Sign Language Club. I was a member in 2021, 2022 and recently became a board member in 2023.

The Clemson ASL Club is very involved with the surrounding deaf community. It allows everyone to come together to socialize and learn more about the deaf community and their culture. We host many meetings every month as well as in collaboration with surrounding universities' ASL clubs.

My role on the board is the 'social media manager'. As a part of this, I am responsible for keeping up with upcoming meetings and creating flyers. I also help communicate with faculty and other board members to come up with ideas to benefit the club.

Clemson Tutoring

Partners with Beginnings SC

Another opportunity I have had during my time at Clemson is partnering with Beginnings SC. Beginnings is a program to provide services and resources to families with deaf and hard of hearing children. This semester I have currently been working with two deaf students. We focus on academic needs through tutoring and also improving signing skills. This opportunity allowed me to work closely with these students and their parents to benefit everyone involved.

Working with these children gave me more insight into working with deaf children. Most of my interactions with deaf people are with older adults so I had to adapt to the change in language fluency and language levels of each child. In the future, I plan on becoming an educational interpreter so this opportunity was very beneficial for me.
